A huge challenge

I have been presented with a HUGE challenge.....to make jewelry for MYSELF!

My cousin's wedding is coming up in May and I just bought myself a dress for it. It has gold and brown in various shades. It's nice but I have absolutely no stones that go with that. I just bought some smokey quartz and some champagne colored gemstones so we'll see what comes of it. I'd like to make myself some earrings and a necklace

I tried to work on the earrings from yesterday's design last night. They ended up being lots more frustrating than I thought they would be. The wrapping on them didn't look right so I ended up ripping them apart and rewrapping them three times. I'm still not pleased with them
I did end up making one of these though. And I like how they came out. I'm also having a lot of fun drawing these designs on the computer. I've tried schetching out ideas by hand, but I'm so bad at drawing that I would spend so long on the scetch...longer than the actual piece. And things wouldn't come out symetrical which drove me crazy. But on the computer I can do it.

What to do when I can't work at work

Our computer systems went down at work so no internet no mainframe no nothing...couldn't do any work. So what did I do? I doodled on the computer

I want to use my new favorites, my faceted amethyst teardrops and my other favorites garnet. I might actualy wear theses myself to my cousin's wedding if they turn out alright. I have my eye on a purple dress and I think these would go well with it
Last night I also made a matching mate to one of my lonely earrings. I started these when I first got my amethyst drops a few weeks ago and I just never got around to making the second one. Lots of different beads on these, pearls, silver beads, garnets, and amethyst

ideas

Lately I've been in a bit of a jewelry slump. I haven't had any real ideas of anyting to make and sitting down to play with wire has ended with lots of wasted wire

So yesterday durring some downtime at work I started doodling on Paint on the computer and came up with two designs that I want to try to make into cuff bracelets

I don't know if I'll be able to, but it will be fun to try.
I also found a shoebox full of single earrings that I've made in the past. The ones that I made one of, had to put it down for some reason and never went back to finish the second one. So now I have some earrings to make mates for

Got a call from UPS this morning, they're delivering Bellatrix's ashes sometime today. Have to clear off a space on the shelf for her

Sleep well my girl

In an earlier post I mentioned my two helpers, Bellatrix and Peanut. Well Monday night we lost Bellatrix. She had been felling sick for a few days and it actualy looked like she was improving. But at 2am she started gasping for air so we took her to an emergency vet. It turns out she had a tumor on her neck and it had spread to her lungs. She could no longer breath on her own, even being in an oxygen tent was not enough for her and she was in a lot of pain. The vet said she probably wouldn't make it through the night. After many tears were shed, she was put down. At least she's not in pain anymore, my poor baby

"We're not gunna pay"

I'm so excited! Yesterday we filed our taxes and are getting a nice refund back, YAY! Of course most of it is going to pay the credit cards. But a small portion of it is going towards buying tickets for RENT at NJPAC!!!!!! We had decided that we weren't going to go because it was too expensive, but after hearing commercials for it on the radio three times every morning while driving to work, this morning I thought, the hell with it, we're getting a nice refund, we're going to go see it. So I bought the tickets, and we're going on Valentines Day. The great thing about this performance is that the characters of Marc and Roger will be played by the people who created the roles on Broadway (and also stared in the movie)

Now I have a week to knit two blue and white striped scarves. We're dorks!

Another passion

Asside from jewelry making, another passion of mine is reading Tarot Cards. It all started in college. My roommate was into it, but I wasn't. She offered to give me a reading. I didn't believe in it but agreed to it anyway slightly curious. The reading she gave me was so accurate that it actualy scared me. It also peaked my interest. After that I started reading about it and bought a deck of my own. Now I have several decks and many books on the subject. I use mostly one deck for reading, but I love the artwork on many decks and collect the ones that speak to me.
My main deck that I use most often is the Fantasitcal Tarot by Nathalie Hertz. The colors are very rich and very dark. They have a beautiful gold frame which gives them an elegant look. These cards have given me the most acurate readings and feel the most comfortable to me. There is a familiarity to them, we have a connection.
I have another deck by the same artist, the Vampire Tarot. They obviously have a similar style to the Fantastical deck. My favorite thing about this one is the eyes. They feel like they're looking back at you
The very first deck I bought was the Dragon Tarot. This was my primary deck for a while until I found my current deck. The funny thing about this one is that my husband has the same deck, he had it before we even met. He is very good at reading this one, so accurate
Last October we went to Salem MA. Around every corner there were stores selling tarot cards. I saw in one store the Gothic Tarot. I fell in love with it. It's very dark, but so beautiful. I didn't buy it right away. But after seeing in in several stores and admiring the deck in each store, I finaly bought it and am so glad I did. There is also a book of the artwork in these cards that is truly amazing.
I have my eye on some more decks. Eventualy I would like to buy more. The Bohemian Gothic Tarot, The Favole Tarot, Faerie Tarot, The Gilded Tarot...just some of the ones I would like to buy in the future

Inspiration

There is an amazing group of artists online at the Wire Artisans Guild. I have applied for membership and have my fingers crossed that I would be lucky enough to get picked. My work is nothing compared to the amazing artists in that group. Even though I'm not currently a member I love to go through their monthly challenges and see if I can come up with something for them anyway.

Their February challenge is "Affair of the Hearts". I had already done a few pieces for the jewelrylessons.com challenge, but I wanted to do something bigger, something more complex. I started looking at different valentines online and I really like the traditional ones, the big lacy hearts and I wanted to do something that reminded me of those. And I love the feminine colors, pinks and purples.

I couldn't help but look ahead at their challenges for the year and I loved what they had picked for March, "Emerald Isle". The first thing that came to mind was a clover, and the beautiful green aventurine beads that I have had for a while and no inspiration for how to use them. But I thought just a clover would be too simple, so I added the border. I think it also gives it a Celtic look. It sure was a challenge to get all the tiny swirls to fit exactly right
